Urgent need at Galmi Hospital: General Surgeons and Orthopaedic Surgeon for 2020

Opportunity Description:

Short and Long Term needs:

Galmi Hospital has an urgent need for general surgeons and an orthopaedic surgeon for 2020 and beyond. With over 3000 surgical admissions a year, and a thriving surgical training program for African surgeons, we ideally need four general surgeons and one orthopaedic surgeon to manage the surgical department. Since the recent retirement of our head of the surgical training program in 2019, we have two general surgeons who are sharing this heavy load. Will you come and join our team?

Our 74 bed surgical ward provides pre- and post-surgical care for our community.  We perform over 500 surgeries each month (major and minor) in three major operating rooms. Emergency services include laparotomy for perforated typhoid, caesarean section, appendectomy, perforated PUD, volvulus, intussusception, orthopaedics and trauma, and fracture management. Other services include debridement of burns and infected wounds, irrigation of open fractures, external fixation, SIGN intramedullary nails, as well as paediatric-specific cases such as imperforate anus, Hirchsprungs, and spina bifida.

Common elective cases include hernia repairs, open prostatectomy, bladder stones, sequestrectomy, hysterectomy, mastectomy, thyroidectomy, skin grafts, hydroceles, anal fistulotomy, hemorrhoidectomy, and various other cancer operations.  We perform a small number of laparoscopic cases, and have regular endoscopy cases. We also have a small wound care clinic which offers daily dressing changes to outpatients in Galmi village with chronic wounds.

In 2012 we reopened our PAACS (Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons) Surgical Training Program, a five year integrated Christian discipleship and post-graduate surgical specialty training program. We have graduated three general surgeons from the program, and currently have eight surgical trainees.

Join Our Team

Our hope is to have more members of the surgical team who, compelled by God’s great love and empowered by the Holy Spirit, will join us as

*We cross barriers to proclaim the crucified and risen Christ, expressing His love and compassion among those who live and die without Him

*We make disciples who will trust and obey Jesus, and become part of Christ-centred churches

*We work together with churches to fulfil God’s mission across cultures locally and globally

*We facilitate the participation in cross-cultural ministry of those whom God is calling.
