ust Add Water DVD: Moral Relativism | Stem Cells Moral Relativism / Stem Cells

Session 1:

Overview of Moral Relativism (Patrick)
Moral relativism is at the heart of most of our currently contentious issues relating to sexual freedom: the sanctity of life and the ordering of virtue. This DVD takes the viewer through the arguments in non-technical language. Young people are very vulnerable because they can neither recognize nor deconstruct moral relativism, which is presumed to be true in all the social sciences. The worst feature of this is the cynical indifference of professors who know moral relativism is false but want their libertarian world, so they lie. 26 minutes

Session 2:

Overivew of Stem Cells…The Promise…The Debate (Stevens)
What have we learned over the last decade about stem cells? There is enormous potential for medicine, but the debate is, “Where do we get the cells?” The biblical and ethical principles are very clear. So why are scientists continuing to pursue embryonic stem cell research when there are over 70 therapies for diseases from adult stem cell research and none from embryonic stem cells? The ethics of medicine that has stood the test of time is at risk.

“Achieving Balance in Life” by Autumn Dawn Galbreath, MD, MBA
God calls us to an equitable and harmonious distribution of ourselves in multiple areas of our lives. We need to be focused on Him and His scales, rather than the world and its scales.

Session 2:

“Am I Living With Joy in My Life?” by Al Weir, MD
God wants us to live with joy in our lives; however, today, doctors face pressures from many sources that can rob them of the joy of Christian living. As Christians we are followers of Christ who happen to be doctors, not doctors who happen to be Christians. We must discover our mission in life and not allow distractions to rob the joy.

Do you need a new vision of God? Not the vague image we fold up and stuff in the back drawer of life, but the real God: the One who parts the Red Sea and shakes Mt. Sinai. Richard Swenson, physician and futurist, offers us the kind of God who stuns physicists with symmetry, mathematicians with precision, engineers with design, politicians with power, and poets with beauty. More than Meets the Eye is a four-part series (approximately 30 minutes for each part) on two DVDs, demonstrating a God who is brilliant and wise, powerful and precise, intimate and personal. The more we understand about God’s power, the less we worry about our weakness. The more we trust in God’s sovereignty, the less we fret about our future. To know Him is to trust Him; to trust Him is to rest in Him.

This series utilizes Norman Geisler’s twelve-point “Classical Apologetic” approach fashioned after Paul’s apologetic in Acts 17. Ministry involves both evangelism and apologetics. Apologetics (pre-evangelism) removes obstacles to faith using both special and general revelation. It reasonably explains why objections to Christianity are groundless; and seeks intellectual agreement on vital issues that must be acknowledged before the Gospel can be accepted.

“Decision-Making in Clinical Ethics” highlights the fact that modern healthcare involves many medical and ethical decisions for professionals, patients, and their families. Does being a Christian make a difference? Dr. Orr describes a four-quadrant method of reasoning, first introduced by Jonsen, Siegler, and Winslade in “Clinical Ethics,” with application of biblical principles and doctrines included in the decision-making process. Sharing personal experiences, Dr. Orr cautions professionals in their assessment of a patient’s quality of life merely by looking at their physical situation. Session 2 – “Is There Ever Justification for Physician-Assisted Suicide?” Should it be legalized as it is in Oregon? Should we follow the Dutch in their legalizing of euthanasia? As you will learn from this lecture, Dr. Orr’s passion for following a “Code of Ethics” derives from his knowledge and understanding of the quality and sanctity of life.

Session 1 – 24 minutes,

Session 2 – 19 minutes.

Sixth in a series of “instant meetings.” Knowledge, skills and attitudes are the guidelines for the evaluations of medical students by universities, but shouldn’t character be measured as well? Jesus described what is needed in building character when he taught on the mount. Dr. Patrick takes us through the beatitudes with an in-depth picture of how we might become salt and light to a dying world. Destroying evil and preserving good requires a right relationship with God and one another. Learn why Dr. Patrick thinks society should go to “the great book for a better understanding of what determines the cohesion of the society.” This topic is contained in two sessions, parts 1 and 2.

Session 1 – 35 minutes;

Session 2 – 34 minutes.

Each volume in the Just Add Water series includes advice from Dr. David Stevens on “How to Have a Meeting”.

Length is 10:12 minutes.

Fifth in a series of “instant meetings.” Session 1 Why Ethics Courses Do Not Make Us Ethical. In this post-modern trend in medicine, what we once called “medical ethics” is now “bioethics.” Could this change explain why ethics courses are so unsuccessful in medical universities today? The moral relativist and multi-culturalist ideas have forced ethics into a packaged deal that Dr. Patrick calls the “Georgetown Mantra: autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-malfeasance.” He brings to this presentation an intelligent, theoretical discussion on the “deeply covenanted” versus the “totalitarian” viewpoints on ethics and living within the framework of the law. Our self-understanding is at stake.

Session 2:
Why There Are No Hittites on the Streets of New York. When the Jews were an entire nation, the Hittites were a large empire. Civilizations come and go, but why do they not survive? Dr. Patrick teaches virtue is necessary in maintaining a flourishing culture and that we must be passionate about truth and goodness. While his lecture opens your eyes to the path of a decaying society, his conclusion will inspire you to get back to the dining room table where “real education” is taught. How we teach the children will determine their outcome and the survival of the society in which they live. Dr. Patrick clearly explains the reasons for the decay of the Hittites at the close of this lecture. Session 1 – 26 minutes; Session 2 – 32 minutes.

Length is 10:12 minutes.

Fourth in a series of “instant meetings.” “Teaching in modern secular state-funded universities should be from a morally neutral position.” This controversial statement from a faculty board provoked Dr. Patrick to leave his career as professor. He now travels the world speaking to Christian and secular groups on moral issues in medicine, culture, and the integration of faith and science. In this session, he shares from biblical stories, poems and essays why he believes secular teaching of moral neutrality is “a figment of the liberal imagination.” Are you intimidated by the politically correct liberal tolerance? Are you allowing it to get in your way of understanding faith? Dr. Patrick offers a “test system” that will help us decide the kind of people we are to be.

Session 2:

Much More Than a Baby Dies In Abortion, states the fact that agreement about abortion is clearly impossible in our society, but asks if we still share a large degree of moral consensus. Dr. Patrick proposes the central question is not abortion, but how to decide if an action is medically ethical. Hear his views on the rationality of both sides of the issue and the consequences that have been incurred through the legalization of abortion. Does law without transcendent roots express power more than justice? Session 1 – 25 minutes; Session 2 – 29 minutes.

Each volume in the Just Add Water series includes advice from Dr. David Stevens on “How to Have a Meeting”.

Length is 10:12 minutes.

Session 1:

“Four Levels of Happiness” explores how everyone wants to be happy, but what is happiness? Has modern society lost all understanding of the true meaning of happiness? Dr. John Patrick, adapting original thoughts from Gonzaga University’s Robert Spitzer, presents his analogies on happiness at each level leading to level four, the ultimate level that does not end.

Session 2:

“Hippocrates and Medicine in the Third Millennium” For most people Hippocrates is a shadowy figure somehow connected to the ethical practice of medicine. They find comfort in thinking doctors are committed to the ethical standards of the Hippocratic Oath. Unfortunately, the truth is very few doctors take the oath and may argue its relevance to today’s society. Dr. Patrick focuses on the Oath and its implications under four headings:
» The necessity of transcendence
» A commitment to the sanctity of life
» Training within a moral ethos
» Preserving moral integrity

As physicians, you will be encouraged to practice medicine in the Hippocratic way in an effort to preserve the doctor-patient relationship.

Second in a series of “instant meetings.” Al Weir explores two subjects on this DVD, the first titled, Is There a Place for God in Medicine? As a medical oncologist, Dr. Weir faces tough decisions with his patients on a daily basis. Session 1 explores a topic that lies at the center of the task to care for those who suffer. Even if you are not a person of faith, when your patients are seriously ill, most of them will cry out to God for help. Answer questions such as:
» How do I put together God’s work and science in the healing of my patients?
» Do I have to take off my Christian hat when I come into the hospital and put on my scientific hat, then change again when I go home—or can I wear consistently a hat that says both Science and Christ?
» Is there a place for the God I serve in scientific healthcare?

Session 2 titled Communicating Bad News explores the methods used to communicate news to a patient that may not be well received. As physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual people, we as doctors and fellow humans are responsible for the whole person. Answer questions such as:
» What is this patient’s most important consideration when she hears the news?
» What do you feel when you are giving the news?
» Is communicating bad news an art or a science?
» What are your goals for the communication that is about to take place?
» What do you need to do the day before meeting with this patient?

Use this insightful tool to create an atmosphere for discussion and growth.

Session 1 – 31:30 minutes.

Session 2 – 21:06 minutes.
