A Biblical Perspective on End of Life Issues

By John Dunlop, MD / December 5, 2018 /

How should Christians come to the end of life? What is the appropriate use of technology to prolong life? How can we assure that when our time to die comes we will do it in answer to the call of God rather than because all of the technology of modern medicine has been exhausted?

Christian Reflections on Dementia

By John Dunlop, MD / June 1, 2006 /

Betty had served God well for years as a missionary in Africa. She was a strong believer and had a passion for the glory of God. At 80 she began to lose things and had difficulty remembering recent events. By 83 she was no longer able to care for her invalid husband and was placed in a nursing home. For the last five years of her life she sat and babbled incoherently.

The Two Diagnoses

By Christian Medical & Dental AssociationsĀ® / September 6, 2018 /

There was a time, a few decades ago, when most everyone interested in bringing together healthcare and the Christian faith was familiar with Dr. Paul Tournier and his work. In this article published in the fall 2017 edition ofĀ Today’s Christian Doctor, Dr. Wilson Grant explores how Dr. Tournier’sĀ message and style of medical practice is increasingly relevant to todayā€™s healthcare professionals because he anticipated the loss of personal touch in the practice of healthcare.

Downcast: Suffering, Depression and the Goodness of God

By Jennifer Huang Harris, MD / June 1, 2020 /

The question of suffering is a big one in depression, since suffering can lead to depression, and depression itself is suffering. We are fortunate to live in a society that is largely insulated from suffering, compared to other places and times where people have had to grapple with the daily reality of illness, death, poverty or war. As a consequence, we are fearful of any kind of suffering.

Making CMDA Better: Lessons from Basic Life Support

By Mike Chupp, MD / June 1, 2020 /

I still remember the first time I donned a whitecoat (one of those half-length coats for students) with a stethoscope in my pocket and walked into a patient room at the big city hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1985. I was a second-year medical student at Indiana University, and I had just received instruction from my clinical instructor on how to perform a thorough history and physical. I donā€™t remember my first patientā€™s name, but she was a young woman with a loud systolic heart murmur even I could hear. I also remember three words that were to guide me through each step of a thorough physical exam: ā€œLook, listen and feel.ā€ A couple of years later, those three words became critical again as I took my first basic life support (BLS) course and became certified both in BLS and Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), prior to becoming a surgical resident. Again, the phrase, ā€œLook, listen and feel,ā€ was the guiding mantra to get my first BLS certification card.

Fanning the Flames of a CMDA Leadership Legacy

By Mike Chupp, MD / June 18, 2019 /

I attended my first CMDA National Convention in April 2012 and heard devotional speaker Luis Palau make this statement: ā€œBig doors open on small hinges.ā€ He explained how seemingly small events in our lives may serve to open big doors that God intends for us to walk through in order to enjoy incredible blessings that follow. A small hinge in my life was a letter Dr. David Stevens wrote to me after I had served at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya in early 1988 for two months during my fourth year of medical school.

Trafficking

By Christian Medical & Dental AssociationsĀ® / December 10, 2018 / Comments Off on Trafficking

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery where people profit from the control and exploitation of others. Human trafficking is most commonly defined as:

Sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act has not attained 18 years of age
The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage or slavery.
A victim does not need to be physically transported from one location to another in order for the crime to fall within these definitions.
There are several types of human trafficking including forced labor, sex trafficking, forced child labor, bonded labor, involuntary domestic servitude, debt bondage among migrant laborers and child soldiers. Human trafficking occurs in every part of the world, from less developed countries to more developed countries. As such, it is a crime under U.S. and international law. Victims can be any age, any gender and from any economic standing in life.

CMDA offers continuing education for healthcare professionals to learn more about human trafficking and how to provide healthcare to victims. To get started, visit www.cmda.org/tip.

Physician as Employee: Is This What I Signed Up For?

By Christian Medical & Dental AssociationsĀ® / September 1, 2008 /

Healthcare has changed dramatically over the past fifty years. Theories abound as to the various causes and their effects ā€“ with managed care, the Generation X work ethic, and increased numbers of women in medicine being three commonly cited reasons for the decline of the traditional ā€œfamily docā€ who made house-calls and whose work hours were 24/7 as needed and the steep increase in the ā€œphysician shift workerā€ who figuratively clocks in and out and leaves his pager behind when he is off duty. Managed care brought financial pressures to bear on physicians in solo practice. Generation X brought a tide of newly graduated physicians whose definition of balance was quite different from that of their parentsā€™ generation.

HHS Mandate Terms Unacceptable

By Christian Medical & Dental AssociationsĀ® / February 1, 2013 / Comments Off on HHS Mandate Terms Unacceptable

CMA CEO Dr. David Stevens said, “This latest version of the contraceptives and sterilization mandate remains unacceptable. Our founders intended the First Amendment to protect every American’s freedom to act according to one’s conscience. They didn’t specify that only groups deemed religious will be afforded this protection; freedom of conscience applies equally to all Americans.”

I lived in a 6,000 sq. foot, custom-built home in the affluent suburb of Ada, had a gorgeous husband, was mother to five beautiful babies, served as president of my young childrenā€™s PTO and was my daughterā€™s Girl Scout leader. It was an idyllic and seemingly perfect life. But it didnā€™t last.
