For those caught up in unwanted sexual behavior.
There is hope. There is help. There is healing.
Because it is difficult for healthcare professionals to find a safe person with whom to talk, this safe space is built to connect to other professionals who have gained freedom from unwanted sexual behavior in a confidential environment. CMDA member care staff are available for you. You are not alone. There is help and hope. To connect to a member care person for a confidential conversation use the form on this page.
Also, if your spouse or someone you love has a pornography problem contact us for a confidential conversation. There is help and hope for you and your loved one.
Churches in America are slow to respond to the silent epidemic of pornography in our culture. Only 10% of churches have a recovery program and not all of those are effective. Parents leave the difficult conversations to pastors, teachers, and healthcare professionals. Few of these are trained for that role. The result is that the leadership role is vacant. As a healthcare professional, you are in a position of trust and can learn to help your church and pastor connect families with Biblical resources and sound advice. Guilt and shame as I’d never felt before washed over me as I realized that my sin was about to stain one of my children’s hearts...

“Daddy, who is that woman?” My heart sank as I heard one of my young daughters, barely into her toddler years, ask that question as she looked at a nude picture of a woman on my computer screen. Guilt and shame as I’d never felt before washed over me as I realized that my sin was about to stain one of my children’s hearts. I knew I had to get help. My teammate on the mission field pleaded for me to do so when I confessed my secret porn addiction to him a few weeks before. My wife also knew of my struggle, but even my recent confession to her of my sin against her and God had not stopped the craving for that ever-diminishing guilt-ridden pleasure. But my child’s innocent question broke down any remaining illusion that I could gain victory over this sin alone. And so began my journey back into the light.
It’s been 16 years since I took the first step and called our member support team at our mission’s headquarters. Thankfully, our mission had a forward-thinking policy that if we self-reported this type of moral failure, then there was hope for restoration to the work of
medical missions overseas. But that required serious work in professional counselling and close accountability with my pastor. It took months of counseling, accountability, and difficult soul work before I would finally discover the insidious roots of this sin.
I would encourage you to reach out as I did. What they say is true; you cannot get out of that world alone.

I was active in our church, leading a life group, and a former elder but I had a secret pornography problem. One day a CMDA physician member asked me to assist him in responsibilities with our mission agency. Even though I would be a volunteer, non-salaried staff person, I had to go through their entire new employee onboarding process. This process included a pornography screening test. I took the test honestly. The result was “You may have a problem.” I was humiliated, and wanted to back out of my application, fearful for my reputation and career, however, I revealed my results to the mission agency.
Graciously they held me accountable and guided me through their restoration process with a member care staff person. I told him my story and suddenly I was not alone, I had an ally. I added surveillance software to all my screens. I made progress. The dirty doom scrolling stopped. The sin-guilt-shame-isolation cycle stopped. I discovered Pure Desire Ministries podcasts and recovery groups were best practice, clinically based and effective. The Pure Desire group leader skillfully and supportively helped me see my fallenness and how to make sense of Christ’s redemptive work. My fellow group members were mirrors into my own soul. We were a band of broken brothers discovering grace together. My family and I are now on a different trajectory. I found hope when I reached out for help. Thank you, Jesus!

I grew up in a permissive home and was sexually abused as an 11-year-old. This made sex seem okay when I entered college. I came to Christ through a campus ministry. When my pastor preached on spiritual victory in our lives, I realized I could live without sex. My pastor was my ally in this battle. He was understanding, grace-filled and an accountability partner.
I met my wife while I was in medical college and this motivated me to get out of this sin cycle. She is an amazing believer and a precious gift from God that I do not deserve. I recently found a CMDA member as an additional ally. He has been approachable, encouraging and knowledgeable. I am so grateful to be rid of being trapped in brokenness. You can have what I found, others have gone before you.
