From Skepticism to Saving Faith
Monica arrived at medical school convinced God wasn’t real.
Having long considered herself an atheist, she wasn’t searching for faith. She was focused on her education, preparing for a career in healthcare and adapting to life in a new city.
God, however, was already at work.
Not long after arriving on campus, Monica met a kind woman at a downtown bookstore. Before they parted ways, the woman gave her a Bible, the first Monica had ever owned.
Out of curiosity, she began reading.
To her surprise, the Bible wasn’t what she expected.
She found its message relevant to her life and even connected to some of the topics she was studying in medical school. Questions she had never considered before began to surface.
Then, during a biology class, her professor made an unexpected observation about the extraordinary complexity of the human hand and how its design pointed to a Creator.
The comment stayed with her.
Later, a conversation with a classmate challenged her even further. He shared he believed in God and had a personal relationship with Him. Monica was intrigued.
“I began questioning everything I’d ever believed,” she recalled.
Again and again, God placed people in her path who faithfully reflected His truth and love.
One of those people was Lisa, a CMDA campus advisor.
Lisa welcomed Monica, answered questions and invited her to church during Christmas break. As Monica spent time with believers and studied Scripture for herself, she began seeing something she hadn’t expected.
“These Christians really love their Bibles,” she thought.
Before long, she did too.
A Life-changing Weekend
Monica then attended a CMDA student retreat in Kansas City, Missouri.
Throughout the weekend, she listened as healthcare professionals and fellow students shared how Christ had transformed their lives. She heard testimonies of faith, service and the unique calling of following Jesus in healthcare.
One speaker in particular left a lasting impression. As he described his relationship with God and the way it shaped both his profession and his ministry, Monica began to see what a life centered on Christ could look like.
The retreat gave her more than answers.
It showed her a community of believers living out their faith with authenticity and purpose.
Then, on the drive home, everything changed.
Monica made the decision to trust Jesus Christ as her Savior.
The Power of Investing in One Life
Today, Monica is growing in her faith while continuing her healthcare training. As she prepares for future rotations and opportunities in healthcare, she knows she is not walking alone. CMDA mentors and friends continue to encourage and support her as she matures both professionally and spiritually.
Her story is remarkable.
Yet, it is not uncommon.
Every year, thousands of students, residents and fellows encounter the love of Christ through CMDA’s Campus & Community Ministries. Through local chapters, campus advisors, conferences, mentoring relationships and spiritual resources, they find a community that helps them navigate the challenges of healthcare training while growing in their faith.
Often, it starts with something simple:
A conversation.
An invitation.
A mentor willing to invest in a student.
For Monica, those faithful acts of obedience became part of God’s plan to draw her to Himself.
And today, because people chose to invest in one life, her story is being written for His glory.
