Our Annual Conference, this year entitled “God Makes A Way”, is the premier event for the ministry of WPDC.  Come meet with friends old and new where connections are deepened, expertise is strengthened, and hope is restored.  Our weekend will be a mix of workshops, CME, plenary speakers, worship, communal meals, and quiet time for rest and relaxation.  This year’s plenary program will feature Helen Smallbone, mother of seven creative children—including Christian music artists for KING & COUNTRY and Rebecca St. James, and author of Behind the Lights.  Female medical professionals across the world consider this a “don’t miss” event- if you’ve never been, may God “make a way” for you to attend this September in Albuquerque!

Conference registration includes 8 meals and all programing. CME is free for CMDA members and will have a nominal fee for non-members. Lodging and travel need to be arranged separately.

WPDC Conference HELEN SMALLBONE grew up in Australia as the daughter of a Methodist minister and the youngest of four children. Even though she grew up in church, her faith became real in her mid-teens when she committed her life to Christ at a Billy Graham Crusade in Sydney.

Trained as an Occupational Therapist, Helen’s greatest desire was to serve God and become a wife and mother. At age 20, she married the love of her life, David Smallbone, and over the next 14 years they added seven children to their family.

In 1991, after experiencing a financial crisis in Australia, the Smallbone family relocated to the Nashville, TN area, where David began a career in music management for Christian artists. This new adventure required every family member to place their trust in God and live by faith.

In Behind the Lights: The Extraordinary Adventure of a Mum and Her Family (K-LOVE Books, April 12, 2022), Helen shares how the Smallbone family learned to let God lead – which has included living outside the box of American cultural norms. Her book describes God’s constant faithfulness and provision during the lean years after their arrival in the United States. Helen recounts stories that vividly describe how the family worked together to make ends meet, found support in new friends and neighbors, homeschooled on the road, and grew closer with every challenge they overcame. UNSUNG HERO, a film depicting the trials and triumphs of the Smallbone family’s journey to the USA, released theatrically nationwide with Lionsgate in April 2024.

Helen’s love for God and family has only grown stronger as she and David have supported their children’s creative career paths. Their daughter, Rebecca St. James, and two of their sons, for KING & COUNTRY stars Luke and Joel Smallbone, have collectively earned five Grammys.

When not busy with her children and grandchildren, Helen is dedicated to sharing her passion and love for God with those around her. She is the co-founder of MUMlife, (http://www.MUMlife.org), a ministry of “mothers uplifting mothers,” and co-host of the MUMlife Community Podcast. David and Helen Smallbone live just outside of Nashville with a small menagerie of animals.

Mike Chupp, MD, FACS, FCS (ECSA), Chief Executive Officer, was born in Frankfort, Indiana and grew up in the suburbs of Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a pre-medical degree in chemistry from Taylor University in 1984, and then graduated as an AOA scholar with an MD degree from Indiana University in 1988.

He completed a five-year general surgery residency at Methodist Hospital in 1993. From 1993 to 2016, Mike enjoyed nearly seven years of private general surgery practice as a missionary member of the Surgical Department of Southwestern Medical Clinic (a large Christian multi-specialty group) and Lakeland Regional Health System in St. Joseph, Michigan. Mike has been married to Pam for 31 years and they have four adult children and one granddaughter. In 2016, Mike completed 20 years of service as a career missionary with World Gospel Mission (WGM), serving at Tenwek Mission Hospital in Kenya.

Dr. Chupp testifies that he is an example of how life and ministry don’t always turn out the way you expected. In his words, “During my years of ministry at Tenwek Hospital, my surgical emphasis wasn’t on general surgery, but instead I became an orthopedic traumatologist. My work at the hospital was heavily invested in administration and leadership for the entire hospital as well as WGM Kenya field leadership. But God’s gifting and preparation and character development in Mike’s life was not wasted. In 2016, Dr. David Stevens and Dr. Gene Rudd invited Mike to join the executive leadership team of CMDA. Mike authentically shares “It has been a great honor to help lead the organization that has had the longest and most profound impact on my professional life as a Christian physician.” Dr. Chupp was appointed CEO by the CMDA Board in September 2019, as Dr. Stevens’ successor. With God’s help, CMDA has continued to advance and thrive under Dr. Chupp’s leadership; pursuing the vision of “Bringing the hope and healing of Christ to the world through healthcare professionals”.
