The Standing Strong in Training Curriculum is designed to prepare healthcare students and residents to winsomely advocate for controversial Biblical values. The four values emphasized in the curriculum are preserving unborn life, obedience to Biblical sexuality, adherence to biological gender, and the practice of conscientious healthcare. The curriculum is designed to help those participating solidify their foundational beliefs and values through group discussion in order to stand strong against the cultural pressures they may face in their healthcare training.

The curriculum’s seven modules are designed for group settings, allowing attendees to solidify their foundational worldview beliefs regarding important issues, such as the beginning of life, end of life and biblical sexuality. Each module also offers ideas of how to winsomely defend biblical values and positively interact with others in developing their worldview beliefs.

Module 1

Understanding the Elephant

The beginning module will introduce the concept of three different levels of thinking to help the participant understand how initial moral decisions are made. Psychological research has shown that when someone is faced with an unfamiliar moral dilemma, they will typically utilize their intuition to arrive at the answer for the moral dilemma, rather than thinking rationally or biblically. The elephant represents their intuition while the rider represents their rational thinking and the interplay between the two will be explored through role-play in group discussion.

Module 2

Overcoming the Elephant

Module two emphasizes the principle that if the participant desires to live their life in alignment with their foundational beliefs, they must learn to overcome the elephant by solving unfamiliar moral dilemmas through rational thinking based on those foundational beliefs, rather than allowing their intuition to control their moral decision-making. Once again, role-play in group discussion will allow the participant to explore the difference between moral decision-making by the elephant versus rational thinking, learning that the great benefit in overcoming the elephant is the ability to live a life that is completely coherent with their foundational beliefs.

Module 3

Introduction to Biblical Thinking

In this module, the three levels of thinking are reviewed, emphasizing the critical importance of adopting a foundational Biblical worldview that aligns with reality. From that foundational Biblical worldview, the participant will learn to develop Biblical principles to inform their moral decision-making in partnership with others in their group. They will also learn how a coherent thinking process allows the participant to respond to moral dilemmas in a manner that results in a consistent life characterized by integrity. This Biblical worldview and resulting Biblical principles then form the basis for defending Biblical values within their healthcare educational experience.

Module 4

Winsomely Advocating for Unborn Life

Utilizing the framework and principles developed in the first three modules, this fourth module focuses on various moral dilemmas that may threaten unborn life. The participant will initially be asked to defend a position a pro-life position in a setting that promotes abortion rights and after common responses are provided, they will utilize role-play in their group to develop their own personalized response. The curriculum then brings up the common dilemmas of rape and a physical threat to the life of the mother, providing suggested winsome answers and allowing the participant to personalize their responses through role-play and group discussion.

Module 5

Winsomely Advocating for Biblical Sexuality

Utilizing the framework and principles developed in the first three modules, this module helps the participant winsomely address the prevailing unbiblical forms of sexuality so prevalent in our society today. The issue of homosexual marriage is presented initially, along with examples of winsome responses arising from a Biblical worldview, and the participants then develop their own personalized responses through group discussion and role-play to this scenario as well as other commonly encountered situations such as living together prior to marriage.

Module 6

Winsomely Advocating for Truth in Biology

This module helps the participant address the increasingly prevalent cultural assumption that gender is internally discerned by utilizing the framework and principles developed in the first three modules to gently advocate for adherence to biological sex, especially in the younger population. As healthcare students and residents are increasingly put into the position that they must affirm a person’s gender identity, several examples of how to winsomely advocate for adherence to biological sex, or truth in biology, are provided so that through group discussion and role-play, participants are able to formulate their own personal response to the situation. Medical evidence is also provided to help the participant stand against using preferred pronouns and social gender transition and enable them to winsomely defend adherence to biological sex.

Module 7

Winsomely Advocating for Conscience Freedom in Healthcare

The concluding module of the Standing Strong in Training curriculum continues to utilize the framework and principles developed in the first three modules to equip the healthcare student and resident to advocate for the freedom to practice conscientious medicine. The participant is reminded that the concept of conscience is deeply rooted in the Biblical worldview, which requires obedience to the conscience and that disobedience to the conscience can result in certain forms of harm. Participants are then prepared to winsomely stand for conscience freedoms in various situations with the assistance of group discussion, role-play and material presented in the video.
