Transgender

The advocacy team here at CMDA has been working hard in 2024 to continue our efforts to support state-level bans on gender transition therapy (GTT) and legislation that prevents state monies from funding GTT. We are also working hard to oppose legislation that would enshrine the ability of adolescents to obtain GTT into state statutes. Below is a color-coded map detailing our engagement for the first two quarters of 2024. Fifteen states, including states that lean more progressive, introduced bills that would have placed restrictions on GTT. We opposed efforts to expand access to GTT in three states and both supported and opposed various measures in three additional states.

In 2023, we engaged on gender bills through our American Academy of Medical Ethics (AAME) in 28 different states, supporting legislation to limit access to GTT and opposing legislation that would ease access to GTT for minors.

Transgender Identification Ethics Statement

A novel way of thinking about one’s body has entered into popular culture. “Transgender” individuals refer to their “gender” as a sexual identity that may be male or female, something in between, or neither. This self-identification differs from, and takes priority over, their biological sex as recognized in their chromosomal DNA and innate physical sexual characteristics.

Gender Dysphoria Fact Sheet

Gender identity issues are complex in today’s culture. “Transgender” individuals refer to their “gender” as a sexual identity that is different than their biologic sex on the basis of an internal sense or feeling. This self-identification differs from their biological sex, and it takes priority over their physical biology as recognized in their chromosomal DNA and innate physical sexual characteristics.

Regretting Transition for Gender Dysphoria

Supporters of gender-affirming therapy (GAT)—transition affirmation—are doubling down on claims that regret and detransition are rare. From state-level bills in my home state of California to national policy initiatives from the federal administration, the assertion that transitioning for gender dysphoria is all but regret free is used as a promotional tool for the proposed mandating of GAT essentially on request. However, the sales pitch does not hold up to inspection.
