88% of advanced cancer patients reported that religion and spirituality are personally important in their illness.

Yet 47% said their spiritual needs were minimally or not at all supported by a religious community — and 72% said they were minimally or not at all supported by the medical system.

A patient lying in a hospital bed silently wondering whether God has abandoned them is measurably more likely to die.

Because rarely is anyone in the building trained to notice the spiritual need of the patients, a spiritual emergency is being treated as an unmeasured variable.

Depression was strongly correlated with desire for hastened death among patients low in spiritual well-being.

Those same religiously-supported patients, when the medical team also provided spiritual support, the odds of hospice enrollment more than doubled, aggressive interventions dropped roughly 77%, and ICU deaths dropped 81%.

Advanced cancer patients with high positive religious coping were nearly three times more likely to receive intensive life-prolonging care in the last week of life

Those who coped having spiritual care also did less advance care planning — fewer DNR orders, living wills, and healthcare proxies — than patients who did not.
