From Trainee to Employed: Setting Yourself Up for Success – Linda Wrede Seaman

About Our Guest(s)

Linda Wrede Seaman

Dr. Linda Wrede (Reedy) Seaman is a triple board certified physician with a very broad experience in her 40 year career of practicing medicine. She achieved fellowship status and board certification with the AAFP, ACEP, and AAHPM after undergraduate work at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and graduate medical education in Lexington Ky. She relocated to the West Coast where she trained in family medicine with a surgical focus at UCLA Harbor General hospital in Los Angeles California. Dr Seaman enjoyed work in emergency medicine for many years while doing mission work. In 1989 she and her ER husband moved to eastern rural Washington as newly weds, where they raised their one daughter, balancing work in ER and family practice, political involvement and homeschooling. Together they founded Intellicard, Inc, a publishing company producing pocket sized medical information cards and books. Symptom Management Algorithms, a Handbook for Palliative Care, is in its 4th and last edition, reflecting Dr Seaman’s passion for improving end of life care which began as a part time hospice medical director in the early 90’s. Currently Dr Seaman is an adjunct faculty for Pacific Northwest Health Sciences University osteopathic medical school and serves as the campus advisor for the CMDA PNWU student club. Educating and preparing students for real life encounters lead to a lecture on contract negotiations. Many didactic talks on hospice & palliative medicine, and additional lectures on work life balance, the impact of mission work, and contract negotiations have raised awareness in the medical students. Recently, several students from PNWU who have now completing their graduate work have sought Dr Seaman to discuss or review their contracts. Over her career she worked many jobs in order to maintain work life balance, including medical director roles for community health clinics, hospices, and department of corrections, establishing Yakima Physicians, as her own locums and consulting business. Dr Seaman has recently achieved the “mostly retired” status, but continues to serve on state, regional, and local medical advisory roles, retains involvement with PNWU campus advising, and is enjoying more travel.
