Human Bioengineering: Made in the Image of Whom?

By David Prentice, PhD | March 11, 2021

While COVID-19 has consumed the attention and energies of the world for the last year, other bioethical and scientific challenges have not gone away and are set to burst back to the forefront this year. Significant advances were made in 2020 to move away from the antiquated science using human fetal tissue from abortion and toward development of modern techniques and biological models that do not use fetal tissue. However, a resurgence of research using trafficked aborted fetal body parts is likely with the new White House Administration. Calls have already been made to gut the current ethical regulations on federal funding of fetal tissue research. The drumbeat for taxpayer dollars to pay for experiments using fetal organs and tissues from abortion continues, trying to make use of the crisis to justify unethical research, e.g., making humanized ā€œlung-only miceā€ to investigate COVID-19. In the meantime, adult stem cells have made ā€œmini-lungsā€ in the lab that faithfully model normal lungs, and they are already being used to study COVID-19 infections and therapies.

The Return of the God Hypothesis

By Steven Willing, MD | April 15, 2021

In last Saturdayā€™s New York Times, Christian columnist Ross Douthat asks, ā€œCan the Meritocracy Find God?ā€

ā€œThe secularization of America probably wonā€™t reverse unless the intelligentsia gets religion,ā€ writes Douthat. Nor is he sanguine for the prospects of that occurring. Douthat postulates two primary obstacles. First, ā€œa moral vision that regards emancipated, self-directed choice as essential to human freedom and the good life.ā€ Second, an entrenched anti-supernaturalism: ā€œThe average Ivy League professor, management consultant or Google engineer is not necessarily a strict materialist, but they have all been trained in a kind of scientism, which regards strong religious belief as fundamentally anti-rational, miracles as superstition, the idea of a personal God as so much wishful thinking.ā€

Redefining Essential in the Midst of a Pandemic

By Christian Medical & Dental AssociationsĀ® | September 2, 2020

Am I essential? As general dental professionals, we do not imagine many of you have asked yourselves this question. By choosing dentistry as a profession, it is safe to assume a certain level of job security and financial stability. Though both of those factors may have been initial lures into the field, what inspires us daily to practice dentistry is the impact we have in the lives of our patients, each created in the image of God. As dentists, all that we work to achieve is essential to the health and well-being of our respective communities. And yet, in the midst of the Coronavirus global pandemic, it feels like oral healthcare was deemed non-essential. States recommended dentists limit their offices to emergency patients only. No handpieces were running. No cavitrons were cleaning. Some dentists were even finding themselves unemployed! Oral healthcare seemed low on the priority list, and any momentum we had made in terms of advocating prevention felt lost.

Iā€™ve been discouraged over my ā€œeffectivenessā€ for Christ recently. It seems that, though I love Him, I am not accomplishing the work for Him that I imagine. At 10 a.m. this morning I took a 15-minute break and kneeled in the hospital chapel, just asking for Him to do what He wanted with me for His service.

The Core of Things

By Al Weir, MD | January 23, 2024

The Core of Things | Weekly Devotions by Al Weir, MD | ā€œShe was a medical student and a new Christian. She came with a small group of Christian students from Macedonia to our Albanian student evangelism conference. Small in stature, smart and soft-spoken, she rarely spoke up in our small discussion group of mixed Muslim, orthodox, atheist and agnostic students.”

Peterson & Gieser Student Scholarship

By Christian Medical & Dental AssociationsĀ® | August 6, 2018

CMDA had its beginning when George Peterson and Kenneth Gieser met at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois in 1931.Ā  Both men had been experiencing a sense of loneliness in their Christian walk.Ā  The two began meeting regularly for prayer and Scripture reading every Saturday afternoon.Ā  Soon other medical students joined the two men, and CMDA was born.

Because CMDA values its healthcare students, we are pleased to announce the Peterson & Gieser Student Scholarship! This new scholarship (up to $500) will cover National Convention registration fees, conference housing and food as well as travel expenses. There will be eight scholarships available per year (two per CMDA region).

Too Deep

ā€œTherefore, as Godā€™s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patienceā€ (Colossians 3:12, NIV).

I received this text early last week. ā€œDr. ____, Can I come see you today? Iā€™m throwing up and my stomach hurts. And my brother just shot himself in front of me.ā€

Who is to Blame, and How Should They Pay?

By Robert E. Cranston, MD, MA (Ethics) | April 14, 2022

Pontius Pilate asked in John 18:38, ā€œWhat is truth?ā€ (NIV). More than 2,000 years later, we often find ourselves in the same position. It is hard to know what, or whom, to believe. Many of the people we would expect to be reasonably honest and transparent can no longer be trusted. The faith we place in major media outlets, large corporations, government officials and even churches may be at an all-time low.

Is Wickedness Gaining the Upper Hand? Hardly.

By Nicole D. Hayes | March 31, 2022

At times it can seem like wickedness is gaining the upper hand. The increasing wickedness is primarily driven by an abounding disregard of Godā€™s Word, a blatant disregard of truth. Those participating in and contributing to the increasing wickedness (wrongdoing) that we are being affected by throughout our society is cloaked in what they depict in their minds as ā€œright-doing.ā€ They believe their actions are advancing compassion, justice and mercy. However, this is faulty thinking. James 3:16-17 tells us such thinking or ā€œwisdomā€ will create ā€œā€¦disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincereā€ (ESV).

The Incredible Impact of a Humble Man of Faith

By Robert E. Cranston, MD, MA (Ethics) | April 8, 2021

In a previous blog, I recommended John Stonestreet, president of the Colson Center, and BreakPoint, his daily blog. The Colson Center has several formats for outreach including the Colson Fellow program, weekly podcasts, daily email briefings and Wilberforce Weekend. The Colson Center takes on many of the most pressing issues of the day and thoughtfully discusses ways in which we as Christians can engage our culture. As I said in that earlier blog, if you stop reading this right now and explore the Colson Center options, I will have succeeded in pointing you to a good path for improving your Christian walk.
